Job summary

System One is seeking a Senior Accountant in Houston, TX to own the monthly close, prepare journal entries and analyses, and partner with operations for accurate financial reporting. This role emphasizes project-based accounting, job costing, and variance analysis within oil & gas and related industries.

The ideal candidate will bring 4–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and proficiency with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• 4–8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• Experience in oil & gas, energy, construction, engineering, industrial services, or a related industry strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles.
• Demonstrated experience owning or significantly contributing to month-end close.
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Strong Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
• Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage Intacct, or similar.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
• Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account adjustments.
• Perform and review complex account and bank reconciliations.
• Maintain and analyze general ledger accounts and supporting schedules.
• Prepare financial statements, management reports, and other internal reporting.
• Analyze monthly financial results, identify variances, and investigate unusual activity.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
• Assist with project, job cost, revenue, or cost accounting activities.
• Partner with operations and business leaders to understand financial performance.
• Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, and cash activity as needed.
• Ensure transactions are accurately recorded and properly classified.
• Support internal and external audits and provide requested schedules and documentation.
• Assist with technical accounting research and implementation of accounting policies.
• Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
• Mentor and provide guidance to Staff Accountants and other accounting team members.
• Assist with special projects, system implementations, and other finance initiatives.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join a growing accounting and finance team supporting operations within the oil & gas, energy, construction, or industrial services industries. This is an excellent opportunity for a strong accounting professional who is ready to take ownership of complex accounting activities, contribute to the month-end close, and serve as a key partner to both accounting and operational teams. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with general ledger accounting, month-end close, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and variance analysis, preferably within an operational, project-based, or field-services environment.
