Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Senior Academic Advisor for the College of Liberal Arts to provide academic advising services to undergraduate Government majors. The role involves routine and developmental advising, registration support, orientation activities, and collaboration with department staff and faculty to support timely graduation and student success.

Responsibilities include advising during registration, maintaining student records, and contributing to department-wide

Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree and six years of experience working with college students, or Master’s degree in a related field and four years of experience working with college students.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and/or at the University of Texas at Austin.

Responsibilities

  • ROUTINE ACADEMIC ADVISING: Understand and communicate requirements and options to facilitate student progress toward degree and academic goals; counsel students on educational opportunities and initiatives; provide information about degree requirements, policies, and rules; assist with petitions and overrides; create and update degree profiles; maintain notes on interactions.
  • REGISTRATION ADVISING/ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT: Advise during registration and add/drop; assist with course selection; verify course applicability and progress to degree; respond to inquiries; manage holds and waitlists; ensure course access and scheduling collaboration with staff.
  • DEVELOPMENTAL ADVISING: Help students identify educational, life, and career goals; develop plan for timely graduation; refer to resources; encourage independence and problem-solving.
  • ORIENTATION ADVISING: Advise incoming first year and transfer students during orientations; provide registration support for first semester.
  • DEPARTMENT COLLABORATION: Input on curriculum matters; liaise with faculty leadership and staff to ensure access and availability; initiate programs and opportunities.
  • TEAM SUPPORT/COMMUNICATION: Maintain undergraduate programs; participate in meetings; respond to inquiries; contribute to materials; act as liaison for Student Affairs.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Attend meetings and trainings; engage in college/professional development.
  • UNIVERSITY SERVICE: Serve on committees and provide mentorship; support department events and cross-training.
