Job summary

Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. seeks a seasoned 1st Class Rigger to handle heavy loads in a Norfolk, VA shipyard. You will set up rigging gear, operate hoists and cranes, interpret lifting plans, and ensure safety through inspections and coordination with crane operators.

The role requires working hours beyond a standard week with travel possible and a strong focus on accuracy, teamwork, and mentorship of crew members.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of rigging experience; marine/shipyard preferred or apprenticeship.
• Proficient with rigging gear, hoists, and cranes; strong load calculations.
• Able to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and in confined spaces.
• Able to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.

Responsibilities

• Assemble and set up rigging equipment to move and secure loads.
• Safely lift and position heavy machinery in shipyard and aboard vessels.
• Read schematics and lifting plans to determine rigging techniques.
• Inspect rigging gear and perform maintenance to ensure safety.
• Coordinate with crane operators and team members for operations.
• Identify and resolve rigging-related issues on site.
• Maintain records of rigging operations and incidents.
• Collaborate with other trades to complete projects on time.
• Prioritize tasks and mentor crew members as needed.
