Job summary

Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. in Norfolk, VA seeks a skilled 1st Class Rigger/Overhead Crane for Steel America to move and secure heavy loads aboard ships and in the yard using rigging gear, hoists, and cranes.

Requires at least 5 years of rigging experience or completion of a registered apprenticeship, overhead crane and forklift experience, and the ability to read schematics and work at heights. Expect rigorous schedules and opportunities to mentor teammates.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of rigging experience or completion of a relevant apprenticeship.
• Must be able to operate overhead cranes.
• Must have forklift experience and be forklift certified.
• Must be able to climb and work at heights.
• Proficient in using rigging gear, hoists, and cranes with knowledge of load calculations.
• Ability to lift heavy materials and work in confined spaces; read technical drawings.

Responsibilities

• Assemble and set up rigging equipment to move heavy loads.
• Conduct weight testing per manuals for cranes, winches, and anchors.
• Safely lift and position equipment in shipyard and aboard vessels.
• Read schematics and lifting plans to select techniques and gear.
• Inspect rigging gear and perform maintenance for safety.
• Coordinate with crane operators and teams for efficient operations.
• Control movement of heavy objects through confined spaces using blocks and jacks.
• Identify and resolve rigging issues with safe solutions.
• Keep accurate logs of loads, equipment, and incidents.
• Collaborate across trades to meet project timelines; multitask on projects.
• Mentor crew members and provide training as needed.
