Job summary

City of Norfolk seeks a Self-Sufficiency Specialist II within the Department of Human Services to help individuals become more self-reliant and sustainable. The role involves assessing needs, developing and implementing programs, coordinating resources, and delivering training to empower clients.

You will manage a caseload and partner with agencies to promote employment and progress toward self-sufficiency, measuring outcomes and providing guidance as needed.

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in eligibility work or related area.
  • Education or training beyond high school graduation or equivalency.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required depending on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and conducts assessment results to include career interests, aptitudes, abilities and employability.
  • Provides in-depth employment and supportive counseling as needed.
  • Updates employability plans.
  • Performs re-assessments at prescribed intervals to ensure satisfactory progress.
  • Administers resource updates, conducts job recruitment, coaching and vocational enrollment.
  • Manages the delivery of employment and training services.
  • Facilitates and instructs Job Readiness classes, community presentations, orientations, and course curriculums.
  • Conducts interviews, reviews, and evaluates information from participants for continued program eligibility.
  • Manages a caseload of approximately 60-90 or more individuals.
  • Clarifies regulations by interpreting policies, explaining rules and responsibilities for self-sufficiency reform programs, and providing coaching skills to help customers make a smooth transition to self-sufficiency.
  • Works collaboratively with other employees and the public to ensure that each customer is served efficiently and effectively.
  • Serves as a mentor and assists with training of new workers as required.
  • Maintains and analyzes program results and prepares required program outcome reports.
