Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Administers and conducts assessment results to include career interests, aptitudes, abilities and employability.
  • Provides in-depth employment and supportive counseling as needed.
  • Updates employability plans.
  • Performs re-assessments at prescribed intervals to ensure satisfactory progress.
  • Administers resource updates, conducts job recruitment, coaching and vocational enrollment.
  • Manages the delivery of employment and training services.
  • Facilitates and instructs Job Readiness classes, community presentations, orientations, and course curriculums.
  • Conducts interviews, reviews, and evaluates information from participants for continued program eligibility.
  • Manages a caseload of approximately 60-90 or more individuals.
  • Clarifies regulations by interpreting policies, explaining rules and responsibilities for self-sufficiency reform programs, and providing coaching skills to help customers make a smooth transition to self-sufficiency.
  • Works collaboratively with other employees and the public to ensure that each customer is served efficiently and effectively.
  • Serves as a mentor and assists with training of new workers as required.
  • Maintains and analyzes program results and prepares required program outcome reports.

The City of Norfolk’s Department of Human Services (NDHS) provides a wide range of essential services to its citizens. The NDHS is seeking a Self-Sufficiency Specialist II for the Self-Sufficiency unit to help individuals and communities become more self-reliant and sustainable. We promote economic independence through assistance with job searches, job development, educational and vocational opportunities, and alleviating barriers to entering and remaining in the workforce.

The Self-Sufficiency Specialist II assesses needs, develops, and implements programs, provides training and education, coordinates resources, and evaluates outcomes. They may also work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, or private companies to promote self-sufficiency initiatives.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $54,190 - $62,185
