Job summary

Mall of America seeks a Security Officer to protect guests, tenants, and team members through proactive patrols and prompt emergency response. You will provide professional guest service and maintain safety across the property, including loss prevention and incident reporting.

Responsibilities include directing guests, coordinating with Dispatch and law enforcement, and supporting safety programs during events and peak times.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum age requirement.
  • CPR/First Aid training preferred and ability to perform CPR.
  • Strong communication skills and calm decision making in emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol Mall of America properties on foot or by vehicle as assigned.
  • Respond to emergencies and assist guests with directions and safety.
  • Write detailed incident and safety reports as required.
  • Deter misconduct and coordinate with police, fire and EMS when needed.
  • Support crowd control during events and special occasions.

Job Description

PURPOSE: To ensure guests, tenants, and team members at Mall of America have a positive experience by providing unparalleled service related to emergency response, protection of life and property, loss prevention, and guest service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patrol Mall of America common and restricted areas by foot or vehicle as assigned.
  • Deter unwanted behavior by maintaining a highly visible patrol presence.
  • Assist guests with questions including giving directions and locating lost people or vehicles.
  • Provide excellent guest service and maintain a professional, friendly manner in challenging situations.
  • Appropriately respond to emergency calls including medical emergencies, combative or disorderly guests, intoxicated persons, addressing persons committing illegal acts, and motor vehicle accidents.
  • Arrest disorderly or combative guests.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality, following MOA policy for sharing information when needed.
  • Adapt and respond to varying situations and circumstances, with an emphasis on safety of Mall property, team members, and guests.
  • Write detailed and accurate reports as required, including incident, accident or personal injury reports.
  • May be assigned to special events, conducting crowd control, VIP protection, or stationary posts monitoring access to restricted areas.
  • Utilize radio for clear and detailed communication with Dispatch, Supervisors, and other relevant staff.
  • Request Police, Fire, and EMS services as necessary.
  • Conduct periodic safety and fire equipment inspections.
  • Issue parking violation tickets, conduct traffic direction as assigned.
  • Deescalate situations when faced with upset guests.
  • Assist tenants with loss prevention, safety awareness, and disorderly guest incidents as directed.
  • Monitor safety awareness practices among Mall staff and tenants and promptly identify and report any hazardous conditions according to procedure.
  • Regularly carry equipment including handcuffs, pepper spray, tactical baton, and a conducted electrical weapon (CEW).
  • Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, high volume days, mandatory overtime, and short notice special events.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Prior CPR and First Aid training preferred and able to perform CPR on all body types.
  • Strong listening and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Successful completion of a rigorous 120 hour in-house physical and skills training program.
  • Officers must withstand a full five-second exposure to a CEW and exposure to pepper spray.
  • Able to remain calm in stressful situations utilizing rational thinking and decision making skills.
  • Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to perform duties effectively.
  • Basic knowledge of federal, state, and local law preferred.
  • Training as a first responder, EMT, or Paramedic preferred.
  • Military or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Prior security experience preferred.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the officer will frequently be required to speak and listen to guests to understand their needs and communicate a solution. Officer must possess a level of hearing that will continuously allow them to be aware of their surroundings and recognize when a guest needs their attention. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Officers are required to be able to tolerate multiple sensory stimuli at once while performing their duties. These stimuli may include: loud auditory/noise, smells/olfactory, bright lights, colors, motion, and other visual and tactile stimuli.
