Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for supervising the work of subordinate security officers and security personnel at small to medium size state institutions.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

Plans, assigns, coordinates, reviews and evaluates the work of security staff.

Attends institutional staff meetings and participates in or conducts seminars/conferences relative to institutional security and safety.

Makes recommendations on disciplinary measures to be taken against violators.

Investigates reports of violations of institutional regulation and advises superior of the results.

Periodically reviews institutional security procedures to ensure that they are adequate and applicable to current organizational needs.

Maintains logs, diaries, records and reports relative to institutional security.

Makes announced and unannounced inspections of the security personnel and facilities to ensure that policies are carried out.

May locate and confiscate contraband notifying appropriate authorities.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Security Officer Supervisor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Six months experience in security such as�providing protective services to persons, facilities or grounds from trespassing, theft and other conditions.
Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
Six months experience in narrative report writing.
Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
