Section Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery – Augusta University (Job ID: 300252) – Full Time

Job Summary

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Augusta University is seeking a faculty member to serve as Section Chief at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. The Section Chief will provide overall leadership for the cardiothoracic surgery program and report directly to the Chair of the Department of Surgery. The position is not tenure‑track; the incumbent will devote approximately 90% of clinical effort to program‑related activities while maintaining operative privileges at Wellstar MCG Health.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the cardiac surgery service, including patient evaluation, surgical acceptance, postoperative care oversight, and the development of clinical protocols.
  • Manage the attending physician call schedule and coordinate with cardiology and anesthesia leadership to ensure high‑quality care.
  • Lead clinical outcomes monitoring, physician professionalism, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support community outreach, program development, education, and fundraising efforts in partnership with Wellstar MCG Health leadership.
  • Support clinical research activities and supervise students and trainees rotating through the cardiac surgery service.
  • Maintain compliance with all medical staff requirements to preserve privileges in good standing at Wellstar MCG Health.
Required Qualifications
  • MD, DO, or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ Cardiothoracic Surgery experience.
  • Board Certified in Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery; board eligible in general surgery.
  • Board‑Certified or Board‑Eligible (ABTS).
  • Fellowship trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Consistent with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation requirements for the institution.
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher and as a scholar.
  • Successful experience and desirable personal qualities as judged by interview and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching and research experience at an academic medical center.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
  • Fiscal year based, full‑time position (FTE 1.0).
  • Salary and compensation commensurate with education, experience, and achievements; subject to availability of funds.
