Title : Secondary Special Education Teacher
Reports To : Special Education Director and Building Principal
Job Summary : To create an appropriate learning environment, provide specialized instruction and educational programming for children with special needs

Education and Experience :
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with approval to teach cognitively impaired, emotionally impaired, specific learning disabilities, autistic impaired and / or emotional impairments
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Utilize a variety of research-based intervention strategies, continually assessing student response, to intervene and make modifications as needed to ensure all children are successful
- Act as a designated case manager by preparing for, participating in, and ensuring IEP implementation according to the school process
- Ability to align student goals and objectives with district and state standards
- Competent using a variety of technology applications related to both classroom management and the instructional process
- Provide opportunities for students to develop employability skills and work-related behaviors
- Manage and instruct students on appropriate behavior using positive behavior support strategies consistent with Board policy and procedures
- Comply with Medicaid billing procedures
- Manage a safe, comfortable learning environment
- Assist students in meeting self-help, health and behavior needs including toileting and personal care needs
- Maintain accurate and timely records, including collecting and recording data relative to student performance on individual goals and objectives
- Conduct required formal and informal evaluations to measure students’ progress
- Comply with state and district policy on the use of seclusion and restraint
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
- Maintain effective communication and relationships with students, parents, administrators, school personnel and agency representatives
- Comply with all Michigan and Federal Special Education law / requirements
- Follow all Board policies / procedures
- Effectively participate in meetings, committees, staffing and other required district and building activities
- Provide home-based activities, when appropriate
- Evaluate and order instructional materials needed to provide quality programming
- Direct paraprofessionals assigned to programs or specific students
- Participate in professional development opportunities
- Support school improvement plans
- Regular and predictable attendance
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education, Principal or Assistant Principal
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
- Understand and utilize current best practices in special education
- Demonstrate knowledge of Common Core State Standards
- Demonstrate knowledge of disabilities and their educational implications
- Understand curriculum design and instructional strategies and implement them for lesson planning and development of IEPs
- Understand effective use of school and outside resources in creating a positive learning environment
- Understand how adaptive technology may be used to enhance the education of students with disabilities
- Ability to apply team-designed strategies in an educational setting
- Ability to understand basic behavioral management concepts and demonstrate ability to develop, implement, and incorporate appropriate behavioral management techniques
- Ability to effectively engage students in meaningful learning

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit and talk
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision
- The employee must engage in physical management with students in order to maintain a safe environment for students and others
- The employee may need to travel while on the job to reach different locations
Terms of Employment :
- Salary based on education and experience pursuant to St. Joseph Public Schools Board policies and collective bargaining agreement
Evaluation :
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Director of Special Education and / or Building Principal.
