Job summary

The City of Aurora is seeking Seasonal Streets Operations Worker to perform unskilled or semi-skilled manual tasks and operate equipment for street maintenance in the Public Works Department.

This seasonal role runs up to 40 hours per week for up to six months, with no medical benefits and sick leave accrual per Healthy Families and Workplace Act. Hiring range is $21.20–$26.50/hour, commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Six (6) months of related manual labor or equipment operation.
  • Colorado CDL required; FMCSA pre/post trip inspection with drive demonstration.
  • Preferred: public works experience with power tools or light equipment.
  • Knowledge: materials per operation to environmental standards.
  • Skills: construction/trade skills; hand and power tools; operate light–medium equipment.
  • Abilities: lift up to 80 pounds; outdoor work in all weather; respond to emergencies within 30 minutes.

Responsibilities

  • Shovels and tamp asphalt in a moving work zone.
  • Loads and unloads tools.
  • Assists in installation, repair, and maintenance of streets.
  • Operates and maintains equipment such as jack hammer, plate compactor, dump trucks.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

** This is classified as a Seasonal position where the selected candidates' length of employment will not exceed six (6) consecutive months and can work up to 40 hours a week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. The hiring range for this role is $21.20 - $26.50/hour. Salary to be commensurate with experience.**

Position overview: The seasonal Streets Operations Worker performs unskilled or semi-skilled manual tasks and operates automotive and grounds or maintenance equipment to maintain, construct and repair city streets and projects for the Public Works Department.

  • Shovels and tamps asphalt to include pothole repair in a moving work zone.
  • Loads and unloads tools.
  • Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of streets.
  • Operates and maintains specialized hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment such as jack hammer, plate and jumping compactors, single axle dump trucks with plow and sander, spot patch/pothole truck.
  • Performs snow and ice control operations to include working with operators from other departments.
  • Assists with large roadside trash pickup.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: Six (6) months of related manual labor, and/or equipment operation, and/or trades experience. Colorado CDL, a proficiency Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Commercial Driver’s License pre/post trip inspection will be conducted to include drive demonstration with our trucks when hired.

Preferred Qualifications: Prefer experience in public works functions to include power tools and/or light equipment operation.

Knowledge: Application of materials per operation to environmental standards

Skills: Construction/trade skills. Skilled in the use of hand and power tools Skilled in the operation light to medium equipment

Abilities: Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, outside and in all weather conditions. Understand oral and written instructions. Operate various types of maintenance and construction equipment. Ability to respond to an emergency call within 30 minutes.

Supportive team player with a positive attitude and ability to adapt to change. Strong commitment to safety.

Licenses and Certifications Required: Colorado Class A or B CDL Driver’s License Must obtain ATSSA Colorado Flagger Certification within one (1) month of employment. Must obtain RTD On-Track Safety Training Certification within one (1) month of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical work requiring the ability to lift 80 pounds with or without assistance. Frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.

Work Environment: Works primarily outdoors in both hot and cold weather with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals

Equipment Used: Light to medium equipment common to construction and maintenance of roadways. Operates vehicles such as dump truck, spot patch/pothole truck, crash attenuator trailer, work zone trailer. Operates hand and power tools and equipment for roadway maintenance. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment. Proper Federal Communications Commission (FCC) two-way radio communication standards.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
