Job summary

City and County of San Francisco’s Department of Elections is hiring for 1402 Junior Clerk positions to support ballot processing during the November 3, 2026 Consolidated General Election. Work is short-term, may be one or several days, with shifts that can extend up to 12 hours.

Most duties involve processing mail ballots, verification, and preparation for tabulation, on-site at City Hall and Pier 31 as needed.

Qualifications

• Six months of clerical experience including records and documents, filing, office equipment use, public contact, and mail processing.
• Substitution: clerical training or coursework may substitute for up to 6 months experience.
• Desirable: follow written and verbal instructions, attention to detail, ability to perform repetitive tasks, maintain logs/records, verify information, stay organized in high-volume settings, dependability, punctuality, and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Perform ballot sorting, backfolding, extraction, and ballot-preparation tasks.
• Open and process vote-by-mail and provisional ballot envelopes.
• Prepare and organize ballots for scanning and tabulation.
• Assist with ballot adjudication as a verifier/reader.
• Move and organize ballots between processing areas.
• Maintain routine processing counts, logs, labels, and documentation.
• Sort and organize vote-by-mail envelopes and election materials.
• Distribute ballots, election supplies, and materials as directed.
• Perform other clerical, ballot-processing, and post-election tasks as needed.
