Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university is required.

  • Ability to learn assistive technologies used by students birth-21 years.

Responsibilities

  • Support Outreach Director and DeafBlind Coordinator to deliver services and meet grant objectives.
  • Act as regional coordinator for the annual Braille Challenge.
  • Present to local and state agencies on support for students with deafblindness and training for interveners.

Position: School Support Associate

Job Location: This position is located at 3815 Magnolia Ave., St. Louis, MO 63110

This is a professional position providing statewide outreach services to schools and Missouri agencies and families addressing the educational needs of children (birth-21 years) with vision impairments, multiple impairments including deafblindness.

  • Support Outreach Director and DeafBlind Coordinator in assuring that the Outreach Services and grant objectives are provided to a variety of agencies, families, schools and providers
  • Act as the regional coordinator for annual Braille Challenge
  • Present to various local and state agencies about support for students with deafblindness inclusive of Intervener training and coaching provided by School Support Specialist
  • Coordinate with Outreach staff to provide onsite consultation and other educational activities to families and service providers that reflect best practices in supporting students in schools and in the community, particularly in the areas of vision, audition, cognition, communication, Expanded Core Curriculum and other functional areas
  • Prepare written reports of services
  • Participate in meetings with schools, local and national agencies and parents regarding technical assistance and effective practices for students with multiple disabilities, vision impairments, deafblindness, and/or deafness/hard of hearing
  • Provide appropriate instructional strategies and methodology recommendations for the student and student team
  • Continually attend, research, maintain and increase knowledge of current evidence-based practices through professional development opportunities
  • Coordinate, support and collaborate with Outreach team to provide professional development, workshops and trainings for families and educational teams for students with disabilities as well as for service providers
  • Collaborate with local, state, and national agencies serving individuals with disabilities (e.g., Helen Keller National Center, the National Center on Deaf-Blindness, Rehabilitation Services for the Blind, Vocational Rehabilitation, Department of Mental Health, and Missouri Commission for Deaf/Hard of Hearing)
  • Evaluate and keep data on the performance of the DeafBlind Project activities Maintain and/or coordinate with Ex Officio on the mandated federal census of children (birth-21 years) in Missouri with vision impairments/blindness and deafblindness
  • Assist in the data collection and preparation of required reports to federal and state agencies
  • Attend state, regional and local meetings at the direction of the Outreach Director
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university
  • Experience working with students with multiple disabilities, vision impairments, deafblindness, and/or deafness/hard of hearing
  • Experience or willingness to learn various assistive technologies currently used by students with multiple disabilities, vision impairments, deafblindness, and/or deafness/hard of hearing (birth through 21 years of age)
  • Experience developing and coordinating workshops, courses, and/or in-service trainings for members of educational teams
  • Experience in working with local, state, and national organizations Other qualifications and experience which, in the opinion of the Commissioner of Education, meet the requirements of the position may be accepted in lieu of the above.
