The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia’s detention center for male and female youth located in Washington, DC. It is responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.

Position Overview

The School Psychologist will work with students, teachers, and families to help our scholars achieve the highest academic, emotional, and behavioral success. The School Psychologist is a 12-month, full-time position serving grades 6th-12th. This position will consist of conducting evaluations, including cognitive and academic achievement testing, and writing reports while identifying a diverse student population's developmental, learning and behavioral needs. This position will provide services in an additional juvenile detention facility, New Beginnings Youth Development Center, which is located in Laurel, MD. This position will require the incumbent to spend weekly time at both facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct evaluations and re-evaluations for students as requested or warranted.
  • Articulate test results to families, school staff members, and other stakeholders in clear, understandable language, attending to cultural sensitivity.
  • Deliver group and individual therapy sessions as indicated on student IEPs as needed.
  • Make recommendations for purchasing assessment materials to ensure that the psychologist is adequately equipped with state-of-the-art resources.
  • Keep abreast of advances in diagnostic materials.
  • Maintain compliant IEPs, including contact logs, and report progress accordingly to families and other stakeholders.
  • Act as an interdisciplinary team member in the special education eligibility process, administering IQ, personality, and achievement tests.
  • Research the effectiveness of academic programs and behavior management procedures and acquire new information about learning and behavior.
  • Consult with teachers, families, and school personnel about learning, social, and behavioral problems.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited school or university in educational, clinical, or school psychology, including 42 semester hours of graduate coursework and 500 hours of successful field experience in a school setting under the supervision of a certified school psychologist required.
  • Must be eligible to acquire or must possess DC certification as a psychologist.
  • A clinical and/or counseling background with experience in supervising others and program development (preferred).
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred).
