Site Description

The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia’s detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.

Position Overview

This role primarily supports students outside of the general education setting in a learning environment where all students in the space are students who receive specialized services for that content area. The incumbent will also be responsible for case management duties for students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Serve as an expert in differentiating ELA, math, or other disciplines as needed for students
  • Modify and implement a coherent, research-based curriculum
  • Supplement curricular materials to enhance student learning experiences
  • Provide research-based instructional interventions in reading and/or math through direct instruction of students
  • Maintain data-based documentation of continuous monitoring of student performance and progress during interventions; identify which students require additional support
  • Collaborate, plan, and co-teach with Special Education Teachers/Case Managers
  • Participate in any meetings for students on caseload including, but not limited to, Scholar Support Team (SST) Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, and Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) meetings
  • Complete special education paperwork including, but not limited to, IEPs, IEP progress reports, progress monitoring, and all forms required via scholar information system, Power School Special Programs (PSSP), and/or any other record keeping required
  • Participate actively in weekly professional development sessions, grade-level meetings, content team meetings, and other opportunities to analyze student work, data, and goals
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate, culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Create a classroom and school environment that features a rich diversity of resources engages student interest, promotes student leadership, and stimulates student learning
  • Manage administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain within 1 year of employment)
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred)
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Compensation for instructional roles follows our established pay bands, which can be accessed from our career page.
