Job summary

The Department of Education of the City of New York seeks a Parent Coordinator to engage and involve parents in the school community. The role involves collaborating with the principal, staff and parent groups to create a welcoming environment and address parent and community issues promptly.

Responsibilities include increasing parent involvement, facilitating concerns, conducting outreach, and organizing meetings and events.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and two years of community work experience.
• Associate’s degree and four years of community work experience.
• High school diploma and six years of community work experience.
• Familiarity with the NYC public school system.
• Presently or formerly a public school parent.
• Experience with convening workshops.
• Bilingual where there is a significant non-English population.
• Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
• Conflict resolution and mediation skills.
• Experience working with families and parents in education and/or community issues.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Increases parent involvement by working with school, parent and community organizations.
• Facilitates parent and school community concerns including policies or facilities.
• Conducts outreach to engage parents in their children’s education.
• Convenes regular parent meetings and events on key topics.
• Attends parent meetings with the principal when appropriate.
• Works with the parent association to establish bylaws, elections and operations per policy.
• Serves as liaison to Central and Field-based parent support staff.
• Maintains contact with community organizations supporting the school.
• Organizes back-to-school events to welcome parents and the community.
