Job summary

The Department of Education of the City of New York seeks a Parent Coordinator to engage with parents and the school community, including those with limited English proficiency, under the principal’s supervision.

The role focuses on creating a welcoming environment, identifying parent and community issues, and coordinating with the principal and staff to address them in a timely manner, including organizing meetings and events.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work, or an Associate’s degree and four years of experience, preferred.
• High school diploma with six years of experience in community work.
• Familiarity with the New York City public school system is preferred.
• Presently or formerly a public school parent is preferred.
• Experience with convening workshops is preferred.
• Bilingual in cases with significant non-English population is preferred.
• Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills are required.
• Conflict resolution and mediation skills are preferred.
• Experience working with families and parents in education/community issues.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Increases parent involvement by working with school, parent and community organizations.
• Serves as facilitator for parent and school community concerns including policies or facilities issues.
• Conducts outreach to engage parents in their children’s education.
• Convenes regular parent meetings and events on topics of concern to parents.
• Attends parent meetings with the principal when appropriate.
• Works with the school parent association to assist in by-laws, elections and their affairs per Chancellor’s Regulation A-660.
• Serves as a school liaison to Central and Field-based parent support staff.
• Maintains contact with community organizations serving the school’s educational program.
• Organizes back-to-school and other events to welcome parents and increase involvement.
