Job summary

Harrisonburg City Public Schools’ Harrisonburg High School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is hiring a School Nutrition Assistant for the 2026-2027 school year. The position supports meal service, works under the cafeteria manager, and helps ensure meals meet health and safety standards.

The contract is 180 days and the role is non-exempt. Responsibilities include food preparation, serving, cleaning, storage, following recipes and schedules, and participating in trainings.

Qualifications

• Prefer some knowledge and experience in quantity food preparation and use of large kitchen equipment.
• Interest and ability to learn and work in all areas of the school meal program; ability to collaborate with students and staff.
• Experience with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds preferred.
• Ability to engage a diverse student population to foster supportive relationships.

Responsibilities

• Display a neat and clean appearance per SOP.
• Follow schedules, verbal instruction, and standardized recipes.
• Prepare and serve all food according to health department regulations and HACCP.
• Clean kitchen areas per health department regulations.
• Store all food according to health department regulations and HACCP requirements.
• Follow all instructions when using kitchen equipment.
• Cooperate with staff, students, and other employees.
• Attend trainings and meetings as requested by the cafeteria manager/director.
• Assist manager with promotional activities to encourage proper nutrition and participation in the program.
• Travel to all city schools as needed as requested by the cafeteria manager/director.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the cafeteria manager and director.
