Job summary

Durham Academy is seeking a temporary, full-time School Nurse to provide healthcare services to students, primarily on our Middle School campus (grades 5-8), for a 3- to 4-month period beginning January 2027.

The nurse will collaborate with the middle school counselor, learning specialists, teachers, parents, and school leaders to identify and meet social, emotional, and physical needs of students, while maintaining health records and ensuring student safety.

Qualifications

  • Must hold an active nursing license in North Carolina.
  • Excellent communication and ability to interact with students, parents, and staff.
  • Willingness to use electronic health records.
  • Must meet physical requirements for the school nurse.
  • BSN preferred but not required.

Job description

School Nurse (Temporary)

Full-Time Durham, NC, US

Durham Academy is accepting applications for a temporary, full-time Registered Nurse to provide healthcare services to students mainly on our Middle School campus, grades 5-8, during the time period of three to four months. The nurse will collaborate with the middle school counselor, learning specialists, teachers, parents and school leaders in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students as well as maintain health records of students.

The nurse would report directly to the Director of Student Support and Wellness. This temporary, full-time 3-4 month position begins January 2027 .

Assist students, faculty and staff who become ill or injured on campus whether this be urgent, scheduled, or as needed. Including, but not limited to, conditions such as headache, fever, sore throat, musculoskeletal injury, soft tissue injury, or gastrointestinal upset.

Monitor and respond emergently if needed to chronic medical conditions such as anaphylaxis, seizures, diabetes, asthma, or cardiac events.

Coordinate with parents when needed for education, follow up care, or an early pick up.

Collect and maintain protected health information.

Document all visits to the nurse’s office in our electronic medical record system (August Schools).

Collaborate with school counselors, learning support staff, teachers, athletic trainers, parents and school leaders in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students.

Dispense prescribed medications and supervise treatment regimens.

Be familiar with expectations about student behavior and discipline and follow school procedures and guidelines.

Communication

Maintain communication with administrators, teachers and other school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students.

Initiate contact with and act as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and private providers to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.

Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.

Qualifications

Excellent communication skills; tact in dealing with parents, students of all ages and faculty/staff.

Ability to exercise good judgment, set a good example and comply with school standards.

Must be able to meet physical requirements for the school nurse.

Must have and maintain an active nursing license to practice in North Carolina.

B.S. degree in Nursing is preferred but not required.

Prior experience in pediatrics is preferred but not required.

Should be willing and able to use electronic health records.

Confidentiality is a must.

Compensation/Hours
