Job summary

Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) is seeking a Cafeteria Worker to prepare and serve food for the school community, upholding the School Food and Nutrition Policy. You will interact daily with students of diverse backgrounds, maintain dignity and confidentiality, and promote healthy eating and local, minimally processed foods.

You will follow safety standards, complete daily logs, manage kitchen duties, and support recycling programs in a fast-paced school environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma (or equivalent).
• Basic Food Safety Training is required, and can be provided as part of job training.
• Food service experience and/or training preferred.
• Understanding of food allergies and food-related conditions.
• Physical capabilities to perform duties including heavy lifting up to 50 lb.
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to respond to diverse backgrounds of students in a busy environment.

Responsibilities

• Complete daily logs (temperature, cleaning, food prepared, consumed and composted).
• Place food orders through identified vendors when requested.
• Interact positively with students at the lunch line without commenting on foods chosen.
• Ensure food safety standards are followed at all times.
• Prepare and serve food.
• Perform kitchen duties such as washing dishes, collecting and removing compost/recyclables/garbage, cleaning and organizing work areas, restocking supplies.
• Serve students quickly, efficiently and with a friendly manner.
• Promote positive working relationships and communication within the school environment.
• Adhere to the School Food and Nutrition Policy for Nova Scotia Public Schools and lunch program standards.
• Support the school recycling program.
• Delivery positions: deliver cafeteria orders to neighboring schools.
