Job summary

Portage Township Schools is seeking a part-time School Lunch Program Assistant to join our food service team. The role involves assisting with food preparation, serving meals to students and staff, and maintaining strict sanitation standards in a busy school kitchen.

You will work 8:30–1:00 during the school year, stand for long periods, lift up to 60 pounds, and participate in ongoing food safety training and the Indiana Food Handler's Certification process.

Qualifications

• Basic math and counting skills required.
• Strong communication and interpersonal abilities for students, staff and parents.
• Ability to project a positive image in public.
• Calm, organized worker who can manage time well.
• Enthusiasm for school lunch programs and helping children.
• Willingness to learn food service policies and sanitation procedures.
• Must obtain and maintain sanitation training and a Food Handler's Certification as prescribed by Indiana Health policies.

Responsibilities

• Assist with food preparation, production, ordering, inventory and record keeping.
• Interact positively with students, staff and parents.
• Maintain sanitation standards and safe handling of chemicals.
• Attend training sessions and implement safety practices.
• Operate within safe grooming and uniform standards.
• Assist in cashier duties and meal service as needed.
• Maintain records and reports as directed by management.
• Support kitchen cleanup and cross-training activities.
