School Bus SPED Driver – Job Description

Starting at $25/hr + $500.00 SIGN ON BONUS!

Department: School Bus
Reports to: SB Manager
Status: Non-Exempt

Job Purpose/Objective

This position is responsible for the safe transportation of students from various pickup sites to final destination in a timely manner. It ensures the reliability of vehicles used in transporting students and the delivery of service excellence to all vendors, passengers, and clients.

Essential Job Functions
  • Communicate daily with office
    • Sign in AM/PM daily
    • Radio check AM/PM daily
    • Report to base in a timely manner as assigned by office
  • Perform a daily pre‑check of vehicle before starting run and post check on completion of run
    • Do a step‑by‑step check as stipulated by state and company policy
    • Check fluid/gas levels and fill if needed
    • Report any problems or deficiencies of vehicles
    • Know safety features of each vehicle and ensure they are in working order
  • Maintain vehicle upkeep – washing weekly, detailing every 2 hours monthly
  • Follow rules/regulations governing personal appearance, conduct, and use of vehicles
    • Uniform must be worn daily including company ID
    • Issued shirt, black/khaki pants, black covered shoes
  • Set up routes/times of pickup with parents
  • Know rules that apply to pickup and release of students
  • Learn and complete all required forms for reporting occurrences on/off vehicles, observation of child (markings, bruises, etc.), problems that transpire on bus (ST15); report to supervisor
  • Complete time sheets, rider counts – turn in daily
  • Maintain all position requirements: pass DOT physical, yearly updates of Traffic Abstract or Hawaii Driver History Record & Criminal Abstracts, State Fingerprint Abstract, TB tests, random testing, etc.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to schools, students, and community
  • Attend all training (in uniform)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. Day and evening charters with occasional weekends will be required
  • Essential skills (minimum qualifications)
    • High School diploma or GED, or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Minimum age: 21 years old
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
    • Able to write routine reports and correspondence
    • Able to speak effectively and communicate on several levels (adults, children, management)
    • Able to pass a DOT physical
    • Valid driver’s license, clean Hawaii Driver History Record and Criminal Abstract
    • Ability to upgrade to CDL
    • First Aid, CPR certified
    • Pass DDC (Defensive Driving Course)
    • Must meet/adhere to all requirements of FMCSA, DOT, FTA and DOE as applicable
    • Learn and pass test on Title 19
    • Able to work flexible shifts – 24/7 availability for midday and late runs
    • Position requires working under deadlines and/or pressure
    • Requires expertise in dealing with people and situations involving complex issues
    • Requires compliance with company Substance Abuse Policy and DOT Controlled Substance and Alcohol Use and Testing regulation
    • Requires communicating effectively orally and in writing: speaking with school officials, teachers, company supervisor
    • Promotes mutual respect, keeps workplace clean and safe, supports safety programs
    • Meets all team deadlines and responsibilities, listens to others, values opinions, helps team leader meet goals, welcomes newcomers, and promotes a team atmosphere

    • Minimum of 18 years old
    • Must provide a valid government‑issued photo ID (State ID, Driver’s License, passport, Military ID)
  • Working Conditions/Job Environment
    • Must be able to stand, walk and sit for sustained periods of time
    • Medium exertion up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, 10 pounds frequently to move objects
    • Stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting for extended periods
    • Exchange ideas verbally; must convey detailed instructions accurately
    • Receive detailed information orally
    • Required visual acuity to operate and repair machines/equipment
    • Activities occur inside and outside; subject to atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases)
    • May be subject to hazards from moving mechanical parts, vehicles, and exposure to heat
    • Some remote work may be necessary
