Job summary

Drivergent Transportation in Metro Detroit is seeking a skilled School Bus Mechanic to maintain safety and reliability of our student transportation fleet. You will diagnose, repair, and test vehicles to keep routes on schedule.

Candidates should have automotive tech education and hands-on diesel/HD maintenance experience, pass drug screening, and be eligible for Michigan CDL and ASE certifications. We offer PTO, health benefits after 30 days, and a 401(k) with company match.

Qualifications

• Must meet state licensing requirements and company standards.
• Pass drug and alcohol screening as required by the company.
• Vehicle maintenance experience required; truck, tractor, and/or diesel maintenance preferred.
• May require Michigan CDL Class B with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements, no air brake restriction.

Overview

Drivergent Transportation is a Metro Detroit school transportation company seeking a motivated, experienced School Bus Mechanic to join our team. You will maintain safety and reliability of our fleet to support timely routes and student transportation. Successful mechanics put safety first, are reliable, and adapt to a changing environment.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose vehicle problems and perform repairs per manufacturers' instructions and state and federal regulations. Perform road tests on vehicles. Inspect and repair electrical systems. Perform engine tune-ups. Troubleshoot and repair engines; rebuild if necessary. Inspect, service, and repair transmissions, cooling lines, and filters. Inspect, service, and repair brake systems (air and hydraulic). Inspect, service, and repair drivetrain from transmission to rear axle. Inspect, service, and repair front suspension. Inspect, service, and repair windows and frames.
• Inspect, service, and repair wiper motors, switches, arms and blades. Check body damage and perform some body repairs. Inspect, service, and repair cooling systems, radiator, hoses, pump, and block. Repair carburetors and fuel problems. Inspect, service, and repair exhaust systems.
• Answer service calls and respond to breakdowns; conduct on-site repairs when possible.
• Repair hydraulic wheelchair lifts and hydraulic lift gates. Install seat belts and harnesses on special needs buses.
• Install accessories such as radios, strobe lights, camera boxes, etc.
• Prepare vehicle maintenance reports and submit to management. Review technical manuals, electrical diagrams, and meter readings to diagnose and repair.
• Consult with vendors regarding ordering or use of parts. Consult with bus drivers and other mechanics regarding maintenance problems and needs and advise or assist as necessary.
• Perform safety inspections and assist with Michigan State Police inspections.
• Keep the shop clean and dispose of unusable replacement parts and fluids properly.
• Change oil and repair or replace tires as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Meet all general qualifications for employment and state requirements for appropriate mechanic licensing.
• Pass drug and alcohol screening as established by the company and meet company standards for criminal history check.
• Vehicle maintenance experience required; truck, tractor, and/or diesel maintenance preferred.
• Technical School degree in automotive fields preferred, with 1 to 3 years of vehicle maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must possess or be able to obtain (upon hire) current Mechanic Licenses through ASE or the State of Michigan in Heavy Duty Brakes, Heavy Duty Suspension & Steering, Heavy Duty Diesel Engines, Heavy Duty Drive Train, and Electrical. May also require certification in Computer Electronic Engine and Transmission Diagnostics.
• Additional qualifications: satisfactory driving record, minimum five years driving experience, valid driver’s license, and ability to obtain (upon hire) a valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License Class B with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements and no air brake restriction.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to physically perform duties with or without accommodation: operate a variety of automotive machines, tools, and equipment.
• Must be able to lift, push, pull, move, or carry heavy objects. Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and 35–50 pounds frequently; capable of lifting 50–100 pounds.

Compensation & Benefits

• Up to $35.00 per hour. Paid overtime.
