Qualifications

• Master’s degree in an appropriate field is required.
• Master’s certification as determined by the Alabama State Department of Education and ASHA.
• Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication.
• Ability to meet suitability criteria under Alabama law (ACPA).
• Knowledge to interpret assessment data and develop instructional methodologies.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly intensive environment.
• Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce reports.
• Ability to collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, and staff to implement IEPs.
• Punctuality and regular attendance are required.
• Alternatives to qualifications may be required by the Board.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates support for the school system’s vision and priorities.
• Organizes and conducts language and speech screenings.
• Organizes and conducts hearing screenings.
• Evaluates and diagnoses children with speech and language disorders using standardized tests.
• Selects children for enrollment in therapy.
• Coordinates schedules for therapy enrollment.
• Coordinates the Language, Speech and Hearing Services Program with other school programs.
• Prescribes and implements therapy for communicative disorders.
• Provides individual or group therapy for language, speech, or hearing disorders.
• Refers students to other school personnel for services.
• Participates in IEP development, implementation, and meetings.
• Refers students to community agencies and physicians when needed.
• Provides progress information to teachers about therapy.
• Provides consultative services to teachers, parents, and staff.
• Suggests classroom materials for speech improvement.
• Maintains records regarding progress in therapy.
• Maintains medical information for hearing-impaired students for classroom communication.
• Conducts parent conferences.
• Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
• Maintains confidentiality about school/work matters.
• Shows initiative to improve responsibilities.
• Works with supervisors and staff to implement the system’s goals.
• Engages in professional growth and ethics.
• Reports problems or irregularities to leadership.
• Responds to inquiries and feedback promptly.
• Keeps reports and correspondence timely and accurate.
• Uses and maintains equipment and resources appropriately.
• Collaborates effectively as a team member.
• Serves on committees and work groups as required.
