Job summary

Orange County Schools – NC is seeking an Educational Interpreter in Hillsborough, NC to provide sign language interpretation for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The role supports instructional and extracurricular activities, ensuring access to communication and full participation.

The position requires a high school diploma, EIPA 3.5+, and 15 annual professional training hours, with a valid NC driver’s license. Some evenings/weekends may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Passing score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
• Must complete 15 hours annually of professional training related to interpreting, as approved by the local education agency.
• Possession of a valid NC driver's license; must maintain a safe driving record.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate communication between deaf/hard of hearing students and peers, teachers, and adults.
• Study lesson content prior to instruction to ensure accurate representation of material.
• Provide tutoring support under the direction of the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
• Promote positive, cooperative relationships within the school environment.
• Teach basic sign language to students and staff as needed.
