Job summary

Newport News Public Schools is seeking a Behavior Support Coach to supplement and support behavioral initiatives in assigned schools. The role involves coaching staff, providing in-service training, and guiding implementation of student-specific behavior strategies using evidence-based practices.

Qualifications

• Must possess a bachelor's degree or higher in education, counseling, social work, psychology, sociology or a related field; or hold a Collegiate Professional Certificate or Postgraduate Professional Certificate or a recognized certification in behavioral analysis and strategies.
• Possess at least five years of successful experience working with students in behavioral, alternative or at-risk settings.
• Demonstrate instructional knowledge of crisis intervention strategies and ability to deescalate potentially dangerous situations.
• Knowledge of applied behavioral analysis, behavioral principles and data-driven interventions.

Responsibilities

• Assist staff in defining and measuring behavior and identifying antecedents.
• Support school teams in collecting and analyzing behavioral data for decisions on interventions.
• Develop interventions, functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans for safe learning environments.
• Coach staff in classroom management and behavior strategies and plans.
• Plan and conduct high-quality professional development for school-based staff.
• Develop assessment strategies aligned with goals and student needs.
• Complete required paperwork accurately and timely.
• Pursue ongoing professional development in positive student behavior support.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
