Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree preferred.
- Major or minor in instrumental music and certified by the Indiana Dept. of Education.
- Previous band and/or orchestra experience preferred or experienced as an assistant to a highly successful band/orchestra teacher. Experience with ISSMA competition or equivalent.
- Have basic knowledge of instrumental repair and replacement.
- Ability and willingness to lead summer programs in addition to the regular school year duties.
Responsibilities
- Establishing educational objectives for the instrumental music program and developing an action plan for the achievement of these objectives.
- Maintaining instrumental music as a component of a well-balanced total educational program. The instrumental music program must be coordinated with the entire educational program for various schools in SCEC in a manner consistent with the educational philosophy.
- Developing the principles of musicianship and citizenship through positive learning experiences in students.
- Fostering self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline in schools.
- Providing students a leadership model by displaying professional and mature behavior.
- Demonstrating respect for all confidential information regarding students and the administration of the instrumental music program.
- Managing the maintenance of the band music, the school owned instruments, and the band uniforms. This includes a thorough and up-to-date inventory of all music, instruments, uniforms, and room furniture.
- Preparing a budget for the band program, this lists all anticipated income and needs. This budget should then be submitted to the East Chicago Central High School Administration.
- Preparing and managing the band budget. The budget is developed closely with the School’s Principal.
- Promoting various fund raisers for the School’s Band. This should be accomplished in conjunction with the School’s Administration.
- Preparing the School Band for participation in the ISSMA state contests. This includes Marching Band, Solo, and ensemble contest, Jazz Band Contest and Organizational Contest (Concert Band).
- Create a Band Booster organization group.
- Abiding by the rules and regulations as set forth by ISSMA and school band policies.
- Developing and maintaining a working relationship with the middle school director. This includes periodic meetings with the middle school director and visits to the schools to promote the high school program.
- Maintaining a marching band auxiliary group. This group shall perform at all home football games as a marching band unit and at all home basketball games as a dance group.
- Promoting a summer band program. This includes not only local parades but summer competitions (street marching/concerts) during and around the 4th of July. It is expected that the band director will be present during the duration of the summer program. The band director will develop a summer band program to meet the needs of the students as well as the corporation. This includes rehearsal time and performances.
- Developing and implementing in August band camp. This can be either a one or two week camp in preparation for the full marching season.
- Must possess written communication skills, including the ability to draft, edit, and proofread emails, as well as reading comprehension to respond to those emails.

Follows Student/Teacher Calendar for 2026-2027 School Year.
Salary/Benefits
In accordance with the current teacher’s salary range.
