The technician also serves as a technical resource, assists with staff training, and supports the supervisor with daily workflow coordination and process improvements.

Key Responsibilities
Sample Receipt and Verification
  • Receive, unpack, and inspect samples from couriers, shipments, and client drop-offs, documenting receipt dates, times, and sample conditions.
  • Verify sample identification, temperature, volume, container integrity, preservation, and remaining holding times against laboratory acceptance requirements.
  • Review chain‑of‑custody forms and supporting documentation to confirm sample counts, requested analyses, and special instructions.
  • Document discrepancies, including missing information, damaged containers, labeling errors, and unacceptable sample conditions, and coordinate resolution with the supervisor and appropriate personnel.
Sample Login and Documentation
  • Enter accurate and complete client, sample, and testing information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), including turnaround times and special handling requirements.
  • Assign unique sample identification numbers, apply labels, and prepare documentation for sample tracking and distribution.
  • Maintain complete, traceable receiving records and process corrections through approved procedures and the appropriate LIMS audit trail.
Sample Storage and Distribution
  • Place samples in designated storage locations under the required conditions, maintaining identification and traceability throughout handling.
  • Coordinate timely delivery to analytical departments, prioritising short‑holding‑time samples, rush requests, and other time‑sensitive work.
  • Monitor assigned storage temperatures, promptly report out‑of‑range conditions, and assist with actions to protect affected samples.
  • Maintain organised storage areas and perform sample retention and disposal activities according to established procedures and authorisation requirements.
Technical Support and Coordination
  • Serve as a technical resource for receiving procedures and assist staff with routine questions, unusual submissions, and sample‑handling concerns.
  • Assist the supervisor with daily work assignments, workload priorities, coverage, and shift handovers while actively performing receiving duties.
  • Communicate sample status, unresolved discrepancies, and potential delays to Client Services and analytical departments.
Quality, Safety, and Operational Support
  • Follow laboratory standard operating procedures and applicable quality, accreditation, regulatory, and safety requirements.
  • Identify and report nonconforming work, support investigations and corrective actions, and recommend practical improvements to receiving processes.
  • Assist with reviewing and updating receiving procedures, work instructions, and training materials.

  • Previous experience in environmental laboratory sample receiving, sample handling, or related laboratory operations is preferred.
  • Understanding of chain‑of‑custody documentation, sample preservation, holding times, and proper storage practices.
  • Strong computer and data‑entry skills; experience with LIMS is preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation, and the ability to prioritise time‑sensitive work.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with receiving staff, analytical departments, and Client Services.
  • Ability to explain procedures clearly, assist with training, and support consistent work practices.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, and move sample coolers, containers, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
