Position Summary
- Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities Maintenance, provide security protection for staff, patients, and visitors.
- Operate under the direction of the Emergency Department Director and/or Charge Nurse.
- Exercise a calm demeanor, manage escalating events to prevent further escalation.
- Work well under stress or tight deadlines.
- Collaborate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, patients/residents, family members, and visitors.

Position Duties/Responsibilities
- Main work location: Lompoc Valley Medical Center Emergency Department.
- Maintain a professional image and demeanor. Use interpersonal skills and customer service to foster a positive environment.
- Collaborate with Emergency Department leadership to ensure safety.
- Perform rounds to maintain a visible presence.
- Respond promptly to escalating incidents, identify issues, and address safety hazards.
- Assist in re-direction and de-escalation of patient or visitor situations as directed.
- Utilize CPI Advanced Education training to prevent and intervene in aggressive behaviors, seclusion, and restraint.
- Assist in restraining patients as required under supervision.
- Perform safety searches and inventory of personal belongings when directed.
- Prevent vandalism, theft, and abuse through routine patrols.
- Adhere to LVMC policies, California State, and federal laws.
- Collaborate with contracted security services.
- Remain in assigned areas and complete duties.
- Provide shift pass-down reports at beginning and end of shifts.
- Maintain positive relationships with law enforcement.
Essential Functions
- Knowledge of Life Safety Code, California laws related to healthcare, violence in the workplace, security limitations, and mental health.
- Understanding of alarms, codes, and appropriate reactions.
- Leadership and teamwork skills.
- Maintain patient and LVMC privacy, adhere to HIPAA and privacy policies.
Position Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma; security and de-escalation training preferred.
- Experience: Security and de-escalation experience.
- Certifications: Complete courses within 120 days of employment, such as Verbal De-escalation, Self Defense, and other CPI & NAPPI courses.
- Skills: Report writing, strong communication, calm demeanor, proactive planning, de-escalation skills; Spanish speaking is a plus.
- Note: LVMC may modify minimum requirements based on organizational needs.
Working Conditions
- Frequent contact with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.
- Potential exposure to blood and body fluids (Class IV risk).
