Job summary

Ideal candidates have 2–4 years of experience, a Bachelor's in Aviation or Aviation Management, strong analytical and communication skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office and SMS tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation or Aviation Management.
  • 2–4 years of experience in safety management or aviation operations.
  • Knowledge of FAA SMS requirements and 14 CFR Part 5 preferred.
  • Ability to analyze safety data and prepare clear summaries.
  • Attention to detail and confidentiality in a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

Purpose of Position

The Safety Management Systems (SMS) Specialist supports the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the organization's Safety Management System Program. This role assists with day-to-day SMS activities, including safety reporting, hazard identification, safety risk assessment support, safety performance monitoring, documentation, records management, and safety promotion. The position works closely with the Manager, Safety Management, Manager, Safety Assurance, operational leaders, and subject matter experts to help ensure SMS processes are consistently applied, effectively documented, and integrated into operational decision-making.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation, maintenance, and integration of SMS processes across applicable operational and support functions.
  • Assist with hazard identification, safety reporting, safety risk analysis, and safety risk assessment activities using defined SMS tools and procedures.
  • Collect, review, organize, and maintain SMS data, reports, records, and documentation to support regulatory compliance and program effectiveness.
  • Track safety risk controls, corrective actions, and follow-up activities to help ensure timely completion and effective closure.
  • Monitor safety performance information, assist with trend analysis, and prepare reports, dashboards, or briefing materials for management review.
  • Support internal evaluations, audits, assessments, and reviews related to SMS performance, documentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and improving SMS procedures, manuals, records, and related documentation to support regulatory compliance and organizational needs.
  • Partner with operational teams and subject matter experts to gather information, support investigations, document safety concerns, and promote consistent use of SMS processes.
  • Support safety promotion activities, including training coordination, awareness campaigns, safety communications, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Assist with preparation for regulatory inspections, external audits, and responses to findings or corrective action plans related to SMS.
  • Maintain awareness of FAA Part 5 requirements, SMS guidance, and industry best practices applicable to aviation safety management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support SMS effectiveness, safety culture, and continuous improvement.
