Job summary

Chatham County Public Works seeks a hands‑on Safety, Fleet, and Asset Coordinator to lead safety training, manage compliance programs, and coordinate fleet maintenance across divisions. Qualifications

Job description

The Safety, Fleet, and Asset Coordinator is a hands-on, non-supervisory role responsible for spearheading safety training, compliance programs, and fleet maintenance coordination. Operating within the Chatham County Public Works Department, this position ensures the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of equipment across the Solid Waste, Road Maintenance, Storm Water, and Drop-off Center divisions. This individual serves as the lead investigator for work-related accidents and departmental injuries, leads the departmental Accident Review Committee, and actively assists with CDL compliance and commercial driver drug and alcohol testing programs.

Safety Training and Operator Compliance
  • Design, implement, and coordinate comprehensive safety training programs for Public Works personnel.
  • Facilitate or coordinate hands‑on training for light, medium, and heavy equipment germane to public works, including solid waste collection vehicles, earth‑moving machinery, landfill compactors, and stormwater vacuum trucks.
  • Ensure department‑wide adherence to safety standards established by regulatory bodies like OSHA and the EPA.
  • Assist in managing the department's Commercial Driver's License (CDL) compliance program, ensuring all drivers maintain active, valid licenses and proper endorsements.
  • Support the administration of federal and departmental drug and alcohol testing programs, including pre‑employment, random, post‑accident, and reasonable‑suspicion testing.
Accident Investigation and Committee Leadership
  • Serve as the lead investigator for all work‑related accidents, equipment damage, and departmental injuries.
  • Chair and serve as the lead for the departmental Accident Review Committee, scheduling regular meetings, setting agendas, and guiding discussions to determine accident preventability.
  • Gather evidence, interview involved parties, and document root causes in compliance with departmental risk management policies.
  • Develop and recommend corrective action plans, preventative measures, and post‑incident training to reduce the risk of future occurrences.
  • Prepare and submit detailed investigation reports and committee findings to executive leadership.
Fleet Maintenance and Asset Coordination
  • Coordinate routine preventive maintenance schedules and repair operations for departmental vehicles and heavy equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Serve as the central point of contact for external maintenance vendors and internal equipment operators regarding asset performance, scheduling, and repair needs.
  • Track and report on asset lifecycles, maintenance costs, and equipment replacement schedules to inform departmental budgets.
  • Ensure the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, oils, and fluids in accordance with local and federal guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Associate Degree or higher in Occupational Health and Safety, Fleet Management, Public Administration, or a closely related field; and
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the training of large groups of people preferably in public works, fleet maintenance, or occupational safety environments; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Fleet Management, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Certified Fleet Manager (CFM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or OSHA 30‑Hour certification.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License
