Position Summary:
The Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations and company safety policies at utility construction job sites. This position plays a critical role in promoting a safety-first culture, preventing accidents, and ensuring the health and well-being of all workers, subcontractors, and site visitors.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Travel Position: Yes, with a per diem paid

Key Responsibilities:

Safety Compliance & Monitoring

  • Conduct regular job site inspections to identify potential hazards and enforce compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.
  • Ensure all workers adhere to safety policies, procedures, and site-specific safety plans.
  • Monitor trenching, excavation, confined spaces, traffic control, and overhead/underground utility work for safety compliance.

Training & Communication

  • Provide safety and ongoing training for new hires, subcontractors, and field personnel.
  • Lead daily and weekly safety meetings (toolbox talks, JHA reviews, etc.).
  • Maintain open communication with crews and supervisors regarding safety concerns, updates, and corrective actions.


Incident Response

  • Lead investigations of all incidents, near-misses, and injuries to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of all safety-related incidents, inspections, audits, and training.
  • Coordinate with emergency services as needed during accidents or safety events.


Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare and submit site safety audit reports and safety performance metrics to management.
  • Maintain all required safety documentation including SDS, inspection logs, and equipment checklists.
  • Ensure job sites are stocked with necessary PPE, first aid kits, and safety signage.


Program Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Assist in the development and implementation of company-wide safety programs and protocols.
  • Evaluate and recommend new safety equipment, tools, or procedures.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and industry best practices in construction safety.


Required Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Valid ‘For-Hire’ Driver’s License with clean driving record.
  • OSHA 10 and OSHA 30
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certified
  • 3+ years of safety experience in utility construction (gas, electric, water, sewer, telecommunications).
  • Experience with safety oversight in trenching, excavation, confined space, and utility line work.


Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA 1926 standards, DOT regulations, and state/local safety codes.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound safety decisions in the field.
  • Strong documentation and computer skills (MS Office, safety software platforms).
  • Leadership presence with the ability to coach and hold crews accountable.
  • Must be able to travel up to 75% of the time to meet the needs of the business, including overnights.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Safety Management, or similar
  • Competent Person certifications (Trenching/Excavation, Confined Space, Fall Protection)


Work Environment:

  • Primarily field-based with exposure to outdoor elements, active construction zones, noise, dust, and heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven terrain, stand for extended periods, climb ladders, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to drive or ride in a vehicle for up to 11 hours to travel to and from job sites.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • May require occasional evening/weekend work in response to incidents or schedule demands.


Physical Requirements:

  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to endure the daily activity involved on the job site.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven terrain, stand for extended periods, climb ladders, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to drive or ride in a vehicle for up to 11 hours to travel to and from job sites.
