Job summary

Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is seeking a Safety Coordinator to promote and maintain a safe work environment. The role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs, conducting inspections, and coordinating training for employees.

The position combines office and field work with standard hours and occasional remote opportunities. A relevant degree and 1–3 years of experience are required, with OSHA 30 preferred and CSP/ASP preferred.

Qualifications

Job description

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment by developing, implementing, and monitoring workplace safety programs. This position ensures compliance with applicable safety regulations, identifies potential hazards, conducts training, and supports continuous improvement in occupational health and safety performance.

This position contains a combination of office and field work. Regular hours of work are Monday through Friday, from 6:30 am - 3:00 pm. Alternative work schedules are available, including varying start times and some limited remote work opportunities.

  • Safety Program Administration: Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of workplace safety policies, procedures and programs.
  • Inspections and Hazard Identification: Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify unsafe conditions and practices, recommend corrective actions, and follow up to ensure hazards are addressed promptly.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate workplace accidents, injuries, near misses and property damage. Gather evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare incident reports. Coordinate with Risk department on insurance claim items.
  • Safety Training and Communication: Coordinate and delivery safety orientation programs for new employees and conduct ongoing safety training for existing staff.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety regulations. Assist during audits and stay informed of changes in safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Support the development and maintenance of emergency response plans. Coordinate emergency drills and evacuation exercises and assist with first aid, fire prevention, and emergency preparedness initiatives.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Track safety performance metrics and prepare reports that analyze trends and recommend improvements to reduce workplace risks.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety regulations and standards (OSHA requirements).
  • Strong understanding of hazard identification and risk assessments principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
  • Ability to deliver effective safety training presentations.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Requires Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • Requires 1-3 years of experience in workplace safety.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License, supplemented by a satisfactory driving record, required.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification, preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), preferred.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification, preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders, bend and conduct facility and field inspections in varying environmental conditions.
  • The position is exposed to extreme noise levels, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, extreme cold and wet and/or humid, and moving mechanical parts.
  • May be required to occasionally lift up to 25-50 lbs.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
