Job summary

Lake County Department of Utilities seeks a Safety Manager to coordinate and oversee the department's health and safety standards. You will liaison between staff and management, maintain records, and lead training and investigations to promote a safe working environment.

Qualifications

Job description

Safety Manager

The Safety Manager position involves duties associated with coordinating, planning, directing, maintaining and overseeing departmental health and safety standards.

Essential Job Functions:

• Acts as a liaison between employees and department management on safety issues and generates reports with recommendations for corrective action to the appropriate manager.
• Record keeping of safety programs, accident investigation and prevention, incident reports, unsafe condition reports, near miss reports, or any other records requested by federal, state, local agencies or the Lake County Department of Utilities.
• Maintains a formal OSHA safety training program, schedules and conducts field training sessions to provide employees with instruction for proper safe working practices, and offers safety training classes necessary for employee OEPA contact hours.
• Plans, updates and implements a comprehensive safety program including accident investigations and substance testing, accident prevention plans, site safety assessments, and the drug/alcohol program.
• Performs site safety inspections and periodic audits, safety committee meetings, and site hazard assessments to ensure that safety practices are followed and safety hazards have been eliminated.
• Prepares bi-monthly, semi-annual and annual department safety reports for both the Executive Safety Committee and Central Safety Committee for review.
• Orders safety supplies and equipment necessary to maintain a safe work environment for employees.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma/GED (required)
• Valid Ohio driver's license (required)
• Strong technical writing and public-speaking abilities (required)
• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Business, or related field (preferred)
• Credentials as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30, and/or Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) (preferred)
• 2-5 years of safety and/or emergency management experience, with specific hands‑on experience in the utility or heavy construction sector (preferred)
• Deep knowledge in heavy equipment and/or hazardous materials (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidates for this position should have prior experience complying with Public Employee Risk Reduction Program (PERRP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other regulatory bodies and standards, conducting site audits to ensure safety of personnel, equipment and materials, evaluating, assessing and maintaining safety procedures, manuals and policies, analyzing accident reports and potential injuries, coordinating or conducting safety training sessions, logging and tracking incident metrics and trends, working with departmental staff to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illness, death or financial loss, responding to emergency situations, and performing other duties as assigned. A candidate in this classification must exercise independent judgment, demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, exhibit sound decision-making when faced with complex or unique situations, utilize discretion and confidentiality, consistently deliver general customer service in a professional fashion, and display strong skills in verbal and written communication, organizational abilities, time management and analytical thinking.

Pay: $28.48 - $37.00 per hour
