About the Role
Safety Coordinator
Location: Washington, DC (local projects, no travel)
Salary: $90,000 to $115,000 base, depending on experience and certifications
Experience: At least 2 years in construction safety
A leading Tier 1 mechanical contractor is hiring a Safety Coordinator for its Washington, DC projects. You'll work alongside the Safety Manager as their right hand, helping run the safety program day to day. You'll also oversee third-party safety personnel on site.
This job is for someone who wants to be out in the field, not behind a desk. The best safety professionals enjoy teaching. They help crews understand why a rule matters, not just what the rule says. You'll need to balance safety with productivity so work gets done correctly, safely and on schedule.
What You'll Do
- Spend most of your day on site walking projects, spotting hazards and fixing them as they come up
- Lead toolbox talks and other safety training for field crews, foremen and subcontractors
- Run site safety audits: walk the whole site, review high-risk activities, talk with foremen and workers, record what you find, assign corrective actions and follow up until they're closed
- Review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) every day, help field teams write them, confirm controls are in place and update them when conditions change
- Coordinate and oversee third-party safety firms and personnel on site
- Investigate injuries, near misses and incidents, find root causes and put measures in place to prevent them from happening again
- Handle disciplinary write-ups and documentation fairly and consistently when needed
- Support the Safety Manager with reporting, inspections, documentation and program administration
- Help make safety part of how crews work, so they buy into it instead of seeing it as policing
- Make sure work complies with OSHA standards and company safety policies
