Job summary

Novant Health is hiring full-time Safety Attendants for the Emergency Department (Night shift, 7pm–7am) at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. No prior medical background is required; we provide training and support as you become a vital part of the care team in the ED.

Responsibilities include 1:1 patient observation, basic care tasks, vital signs, infection‑control practices, and accurate documentation while maintaining a safe environment. Certifications within 90 days are required.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Experience: Prior hospital experience preferred.
• Certifications: De‑Escalation Techniques, Life Support Responder, MOAB within required timeframes.
• Ability to work with all age groups and follow safety protocols.

• Provide 1:1 observation and support for patients at risk to themselves or others, reporting concerns to the nursing team.
• Assist patients with daily activities (bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, mobility) as delegated by the nurse.
• Obtain and record vital signs and capillary blood glucose readings; notify nurse if out of range.
• Maintain a clean, safe environment following infection-control and safety protocols.
• Document care accurately, respond to pages or calls, and support patient transport when needed.

Department: Emergency Room (ED)

Location: Emergency Dept and all subunits, including Emergency Room, Emergency Dept. Behavior Health Unit, Emergency Dept. Inpatient boarding.

What You'll Do

• Provide 1:1 observation and support for patients whose behaviors may pose a risk to themselves or others, ensuring safety and reporting concerns to the nursing team.
• Assist patients with simple daily activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, and mobility as delegated by the nurse.
• Obtain and record vital signs and capillary blood glucose readings, notifying the nurse immediately when results fall outside normal ranges (as described in the job description).
• Maintain a clean, safe, and clutter‑free environment while following infection‑control, body‑mechanics, and safety protocols.
• Document care accurately and on time, respond promptly to pages or calls, and support patient transport when needed

What We're Looking For

• Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.
• Experience: Previous hospital experience, preferred.
• Licensure/Certification:
  • De‑Escalation Techniques (within 90 days of employment), required.
  • Life Support Responder (within 90 days of employment), required.
  • Management of Aggressive Behaviors (MOAB) Training (within 90 days after completion of De‑Escalation Training), required.
• Additional Skills (required):
  • Ability to successfully complete generic and department‑specific skills validation and competency testing as applicable. Is knowledgeable regarding guidelines for infection control, body substance precautions, patient safety, and body mechanics. Maintains acceptable standards set by those guidelines.
  • Ability to work with all age group patients or act as a companion.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation.
