Job summary

UW Health seeks a Safety and Emergency Management Officer to lead Environment of Care and Life Safety programs in alignment with Joint Commission and regulatory standards. The role involves rounds, risk assessments, and fire drill planning to maintain a hazard-free healthcare environment.

The successful candidate will manage on-call emergencies, contribute to incident command activations, and support training in a dynamic academic medical center setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Nursing, Engineering, Emergency Management, Business or related field required.
  • Four years combined education/experience may substitute for Bachelor’s degree plus relevant experience.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain all Environment of Care and Life Safety programs.
  • Conduct rounds to detect code violations, hazards, and improper work processes.
  • Review accident reports and make hazard reduction recommendations.
  • Conduct risk assessments for healthcare operations.
  • Plan, direct, document and execute fire drills and after-action reports.
  • Serve on-call for emergencies and assist with incident command activations.

Work Schedule:

100% FTE, days. Hours are from 8:00 to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, with an on-call rotation. You will work at 20 S. Park Clinic in Madison, WI.

We are seeking a Safety and Emergency Management Officer to:

  • Administer and maintain all Environment of Care and Life Safety programs in accordance with standards and criteria established by The Joint Commission, state, local, and federal agencies.
  • Conduct rounds on a periodic basis to detect code violations, hazards and inappropriate work processes and procedures.
  • Review accident reports and investigations and make recommendations to maintain a hazard free environment.
  • Conduct risk assessments that proactively evaluate the impact of healthcare operations.
  • Plan, direct, document and execute fire drills including after action reports and improvement plans.
  • Serve on-call for emergency situations and assist with managing incident command activations as needed.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Nursing, Engineering, Emergency Management, Business or related field Required
  • Four (4) years of combined education (Associate’s degree) and work experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree, in addition to experience listed below
    Master's Degree in related field Preferred
Work Experience
  • 3 years relevant experience, including one (1) year of progressively responsible experience within safety, including leadership and program management. Required
  • Experience within an academic medical center or healthcare Preferred
  • Experience in respiratory protection, including knowledge of OSHA Respiratory Protection Standards Preferred
  • Experience with preparations and planning for emerging or special pathogens (biological threats) Preferred
  • Experience in creating, facilitating, and conducting training Preferred
  • Experience in CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive) decontamination procedures Preferred
Licenses & Certifications
  • NIMS IS-100, 200, 700 Required
  • CSP, CHSP, CHFM, CEM, CHEC or other related certifications related to safety and emergency management Preferred
