Job summary

University of Georgia is seeking two to three Ruffed Grouse Field Technicians to conduct roadside bird surveys, collect samples, and manage ARUs in North Georgia.

Technicians will enter data daily, work very early mornings, and may travel to field sites. Field housing and a work vehicle are provided. A strong work ethic, GPS navigation skills, and a relevant B.S. in Wildlife Ecology are preferred. Experience with habitat surveys and a valid driver’s license is desirable.

Minimum Qualifications Position Summary We are seeking two or three field technicians to survey Ruffed Grouse across North Georgia. Primary duties will be to conduct standard roadside grouse surveys, and search for grouse drumming logs to obtain samples for genetic analysis. Technicians will also be responsible for set‑up, take‑down, and monitoring of Automated Recording Units (ARUs). Technicians will enter data on a daily basis. Daily working hours will vary depending on distance to survey points each morning, but expect very early mornings to early/mid‑afternoon work schedules. Field housing and a work vehicle will be provided.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position Education and Experience required: Will have:

• A strong work ethic and positive attitude
• An interest in birds and conservation
• A strong observational and listening skills
• The ability to navigate using a GPS unit and Google Maps
• The ability to follow directions and work independently
• Good comfort level navigating off‑road locations independently
• Strong organizational and planning skills
• A B.S. in Wildlife Ecology or related field
• A valid driver’s license and good driving record

Preference will be given to applicants with experience conducting forest bird surveys, leading crews, and working independently in the field.

Physical Demands: Will endure long workdays beginning well before sunrise, drive long distances, hike through dense forests, navigate steep/uneven terrain, and work in hot, humid conditions with ticks, chiggers, poison ivy, and the occasional rattlesnake/copperhead, while sometimes carrying up to 25lbs. of field equipment.
