Job summary

System One is seeking a Rotating Machinery Subject Matter Expert for a long-term contract role. This remote–offsite position focuses on oversight of large nuclear fluid pumps and coordinating with partners on mechanical system designs for a Natrium reactor.

You will review analyses, integrate results into overall plant design delivery, and guide engineers on applicable design codes such as ASME, ANS, and IEEE, while ensuring schedule adherence and cross-discipline collaboration.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university.
• 10+ years direct experience with mechanical systems.
• 5+ years direct experience with pumps and rotating machinery.
• Experience with large vertical pump design and manufacture.
• Experience with full hardware lifecycle, from cradle to grave.
• Supplier/Contractor coordination and project management experience.
• Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration with nuclear handling process systems.
• Strong ability to read engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Oversight of first of multiple large nuclear fluid pumps through design and manufacture.
• Provide oversight to partners and subcontractors developing mechanical system designs for the Natrium reactor.
• Coordinate the review of analyses, such as thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer, and other analyses performed by others and integrate the results into plant design delivery.
• Integrate as-designed hardware into overall system design.
• Identify and ensure effective application of correct design codes into the design of plant systems such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
• Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers in applicable nuclear and non-nuclear related design standards.
• Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system design.
• Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for design activities within a system, as well as their integration with an overall plant design delivery schedule.
• Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages of system designs, including but not limited to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, and system interface drawings.
• Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects, working with the Contract Administrator and Supplier Project Engineer to ensure delivery of data and other deliverables, as well as coordination and performance of technical reviews of deliverables.
• Establish and maintain system requirements and specification documents, such as Engineering Design Specifications for major plant equipment.
• Propose, initiate, and oversee testing programs for plant system qualification, as needed.
• Generate design packages for systems, sub-systems, and equipment designs including coordination of calculations, design reports, mechanical drawings, and engineering design

Requirements

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university
• 10+ years direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills
• 5+ years direct experience with pumps and rotating machinery
• Experience with large vertical pump design and manufacture
• Experience with full hardware lifecycle, from cradle to grave
• Supplier/Contractor coordination and project management experience required
• Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration highly desired with nuclear handling process systems, fluid systems or fluid system component design a plus.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience in fluid and structural analysis, tolerance analysis, and the ability to read engineering drawings.
• Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
• Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
• Candidate must be a self-starter and possess ability to coordinate and lead a design team’s effort with minimal direction.
• Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
• Ability to work on simultaneous tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach.
• Experience working to ASME NQA-1
