Job summary

ASM Research, an Accenture Federal Services company, is seeking a mid-level Root Cause Engineer (RCA) to perform structured RCAs for recurring or high-impact incidents affecting mission-critical federal IT services. This role collects and correlates evidence across logs, traces, metrics, configuration data, and incident records to identify root causes and reconstruct incident timelines.

You will collaborate with Incident Response, Problem Management, SRE, and engineering teams to document RCA

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• 4–7 years of IT operations, incident/problem management, reliability engineering, or related roles with RCA responsibility.
• Strong ITIL principles knowledge and proficiency with incident and problem management tools.
• Expertise in at least one structured RCA methodology and coaching teams in its use.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, facilitation and communication skills for multiple investigations.

Responsibilities

• Apply RCA methodologies (5 Whys, fishbone, fault tree) suitable to incident complexity.
• Gather and analyze monitoring data, logs, traces, configuration records, and timelines.
• Lead cross-functional RCA sessions with operations, engineering, cybersecurity, and business teams.
• Translate RCA findings into corrective and preventive actions aligned with Problem Management workflows.
• Define and track RCA metrics (recurrence, cycle time) to improve analysis quality and timeliness.
• Support integration of RCA activities into ITIL-aligned Problem Management and continual service improvement.
• Produce high-quality RCA reports describing what happened, why, and prevention steps.
• Identify systemic reliability risks and patterns across incidents.
