Job Description

The rodent health technician supports exemplary animal health and welfare in service of AbbVie’s pipeline by providing animal health care for rodents under the supervision of the Veterinary Technician Manager and Veterinarian. This includes treatments, observations, preventative medicine, surgical and anesthesia support, and study directed technical activities. Communicates with investigators and other key stakeholders. Works autonomously on weekends and holidays. Contributes to specific projects or initiatives for the Comparative Medicine department. Provides exemplary animal care and adheres to all department and AbbVie regulatory expectations. Works in compliance of all applicable local, federal, GLP, FDA, and USDA regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Proficiently provides veterinary care for rodents under the supervision of the Veterinary Technician Manager and/or area Veterinarian
  • Provides anesthesia and surgical support for rodents
  • Provides rodent study support including technical tasks (minimally tail vein bleeding and oral gavage dosing)
  • Efficiently manages time and prioritizes tasks in consideration of animal welfare and workflow
  • Effectively communicates with other members of the veterinary staff and investigators
  • Routine support for rodent health monitoring program including sample collections, submission and leading mock drills
  • Maintains appropriate documentation, handling, and archiving of data, as required by research, veterinary procedures and/or regulatory guidelines.
  • Provides basic level technical training in rodent area
  • Supports Operations and Behavior Teams
  • Helps to maintain area (lab, vivarium, support area) including supplies, medications, equipment and facilities. Recognizes and reports operations issues in facilities.
  • Performs job functions with working knowledge of regulatory compliance and animal care and use guidelines including: Food and Drug Administration, Associate for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC), Guide for the Care and use of Laboratory Animals, APHIS Animal Welfare Act Regulations.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent education with four years’ experience in a laboratory setting or Associates degree or Bachelor Degree.
  • Strong technical research skills (i.e. oral dose and blood collection) in rats and mice
  • At least 2 years of experience working with rodents in a laboratory setting
  • ·AALAS certification preferred
  • Flexibility to work weekends (as needed) and devote additional weekday hours as business needs dictate
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting as well as independently
  • Employment history demonstrating initiative, strong work ethic, integrity
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse personalities.
  • Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) with documentation experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Willing and able to work a rotating schedule which includes some level of mandatory weekend coverage and holiday coverage.
