Job Description
The rodent health technician supports animal health and welfare to aid AbbVie's pipeline by providing animal health care for rodents under the supervision of the Veterinary Technician Manager and Veterinarian. Responsibilities include treatments, observations, preventative medicine, surgical and anesthesia support, and study-directed activities. The technician communicates with investigators and other stakeholders and works autonomously on weekends and holidays. The role also involves contributing to projects within the Comparative Medicine department, maintaining regulatory compliance, and ensuring animal care standards are met.

Responsibilities

  • Provide veterinary care for rodents under supervision
  • Assist with anesthesia and surgical procedures
  • Support rodent studies, including technical tasks like tail vein bleeding and oral gavage
  • Manage time effectively, prioritizing animal welfare and workflow
  • Communicate with veterinary staff and investigators
  • Support rodent health monitoring programs and documentation
  • Train staff in rodent techniques
  • Maintain facilities and report operational issues
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with four years of lab experience, or an Associate's/Bachelor's degree
  • Technical skills in oral dosing and blood collection in rodents
  • At least 2 years of experience working with rodents
  • AALAS certification preferred
  • Flexibility for weekend and holiday work
  • Effective team and independent work skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of GLP and regulatory documentation preferred
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel
