Job summary

Sauk County is seeking a Highway Operator I to perform maintenance on highways and related transportation infrastructure. The role involves operating a wide range of road maintenance equipment, performing winter maintenance duties, and ensuring safety in work zones.

CDL is required; various certifications must be obtained within 6 months of start date. High school diploma or equivalent is required, with preferred heavy equipment experience.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Current Wisconsin State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
• CDL Class A/B/C with N endorsements within 6 months of start date.
• Federal Mine Safety certification within 6 months of start date.
• First Aid and CPR certification within 6 months of start date.
• Chainsaw Safety certification within 6 months of start date.
• Forklift Operator certification within 6 months of start date.
• Work Zone Safety certification within 6 months of start date.
• Preferred: 2 years of heavy equipment operating experience.

Responsibilities

• Operate road maintenance, construction and repair vehicles and equipment.
• Apply winter maintenance treatments for roadways.
• Install and maintain highway signs and traffic control.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment and trucks.
• Provide traffic control in work zones and during emergencies.
• Maintain daily activity logs and required documentation.
• Respond to roadway emergencies to restore traffic flow.
• Assist with signing and traffic control in detours.
