Job summary

City of Suffolk, Virginia is seeking a semi-skilled Maintenance and Roadway Construction Worker for the Public Works Department. Under general supervision, you will maintain the City’s streets, curbs and sidewalks, and patch/repair surfaces using tar and asphalt while operating heavy equipment.

Reports to Labor Supervisor with opportunities to assist concrete finishing. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma and 5–11 months as a laborer in maintenance or roadway construction, and must

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and 5–11 months as a laborer in maintenance/roadway construction.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of standard methods, materials and equipment used in basic construction and maintenance.
Ability to read simple forms and follow instructions.
Ability to work physically under varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

Maintains and repairs city streets, curbs, and sidewalks; grades and paves new streets and patches/repairs existing surfaces.
Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks, rollers, and tar distributors.
Installs and repairs storm drainage pipes, curbs, and gutters; finishes concrete; patches asphalt.
