Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking an Asphalt Field Technician to join our geotechnical team in Texas. You will test asphalt density, temperature, compaction, and inspect subgrade preparation on active paving projects, ensuring adherence to TxDOT specs.

You will collect samples, document results in daily reports, communicate findings with contractors and engineers, and support safety and quality on site in demanding outdoor environments, including night shifts and weekends.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; civil engineering/geology coursework a plus.
• Industry certifications (ACI, Troxler nuclear gauge safety, or state-specific asphalt/aggregate certifications) or ability to earn them within a few months.
• Physical capability to work outdoors, stand for long periods, and lift 50–75 lbs.
• Valid driver's license with clean driving record for travel to sites.
• NICET Soils / State DOT Soils Certification preferred, not required.
• TxAPA/TxDOT Level 1B (Roadway Specialist) required.

Responsibilities

• Field Testing: monitor and test asphalt density, compaction, and temperature on active paving sites.
• Sampling: collect asphalt samples for laboratory testing.
• Observation: inspect subgrade prep and asphalt placement for compliance with plans.
• Documentation: record test data and write daily field reports for managers/clients.
• Communication: discuss test results and quality issues with site contractors and engineers.
