Job summary

The Illinois Tollway is seeking a skilled Auto Mechanic to maintain and repair a range of vehicles and heavy equipment used in roadway maintenance. This role requires hands-on diagnostics, welding, and safe operation of tools and machinery across our fleet.

Applicants should have 4–8 years of automotive repair experience, a CDL Class A with air brakes endorsement within 30 days, pass ISTHA mechanic test, and meet physical requirements for lifting and long shifts.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• 4–8 years of mechanical experience in automotive, truck, and/or equipment repair.
• CDL Class A with air brakes endorsement required within 30 days of employment.
• Must pass ISTHA Mechanic test with a 65% passing grade.
• Physical requirements: lift 50 lbs, stand long hours, and maneuver in tight spaces.
• Must acquire and maintain all necessary federal, state, and local certifications.

Responsibilities

• Repair and maintain Authority automobiles, trucks, tractors, salt spreaders, snow plows, and construction equipment.
• Test automotive and equipment applications.
• Use machines and tools common to the mechanic trade.
• Inspect vehicles and maintenance equipment as needed.
• Read and analyze Parts & Service Manuals used by ISTHA.
• Perform duties as assigned by Supervisor.
• Additional duties as needed.
