Job summary

Washington County is seeking a full‑time Highway Laborer for the Slinger Shop in West Bend, WI. The role involves patrolling highways, debris removal, vegetation management, and operating equipment for snow removal and salting during winter.

Responsibilities include repairs, paving, guardrail work, roadside mowing, and routine maintenance. Requires CDL‑A with endorsements or ability to obtain, 2–3 years road maintenance experience, and a valid WI license. Pre‑employment drug test is required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license with a clean driving record for the past three years.
  • Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License Class A (manual transmission) with air brake and “N” endorsement, or ability to obtain it within six months of hire.
  • Two to three years of recent full‑time paid experience in road maintenance and repair, including operation of construction equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and heavy manual duties.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment for snow removal and salting under icy conditions and clean‑up after storms.
  • Perform concrete and asphalt repairs, paving and shouldering of roads, construction of parking lots and roads, and centerline/paint road markings.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including front‑end loader, salt spreader, dump truck, grader, air hammer, chainsaws, and others.
  • Patrol highways and roads, removing debris and obstructions, inspecting for broken or eroded pavement, broken road markers, guardrails, and snow fences; may be responsible for a specific section of roadway.
  • Mow grass and weeds along roadways, spray weeds, cut bushes and trees, and clean culverts along rights of way, including sweeping bridges and intersections.
  • Perform roadside maintenance inspections of equipment and vehicles; inspect supplies of gas, oil, and water.
  • Erect, repair, and paint guardrails, guardposts, markers, and snow fences on a regular basis.
  • Perform general labor work involving repair, maintenance, and construction of highways, bridges, and related infrastructure.
  • Flag traffic on road maintenance and construction sites.
  • Maintain an assigned truck and perform routine preventive maintenance on the truck and/or other equipment.
  • Prepare daily reports and distribute labor materials.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records on machine operations.
  • Respond to emergency events and perform other duties as assigned.
