Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled heavy equipment operator to support district maintenance. You will operate and maintain backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, road patchers, pavers, and paint trucks to shave shoulders, patch potholes, and place materials on primary and secondary roads.

A valid driver's license is required with the goal of obtaining a Class A CDL within six months, and one year of related work experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • One (1) year of related work experience.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains various pieces of heavy equipment (backhoe, front end loader, lowboy truck tractor, road patcher, sweeper truck) during road maintenance activities.
  • Operates and maintains complex heavy motorized equipment (paver and paint truck) for asphalt placement, leveling, and painting on primary and secondary roads.
  • Performs manual labor tasks such as preventative maintenance inspection, clearing rights-of-way, cleaning drainage ditches, patching potholes, base repairs, bridge repairs, and sideline pipe work.
  • Operates motor grader for ditching and shoulder operations, grading dirt roads, driveway installation, or snow/ice removal.
  • Operates a backhoe for ditch cleaning, loading/unloading material, tree removal, and debris clearing during regular and on-call hours.
  • Opens and maintains traffic control according to MUTCD standards to warn motorists of roadwork ahead.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
