Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking personnel to perform maintenance and emergency roadway operations, operate a range of highway equipment, and ensure safe work zones.

Expect to conduct pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and follow DOT safety standards. A valid CDL and DOT medical card are required within 11 months, with compliance to VDOT policies throughout employment.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Perform emergency roadway operations including snow removal and debris clearance; provide traffic control.
• Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, and work zones; follow safety regulations.
• Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs; conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections.
