Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled supervisor to oversee a crew performing roadway maintenance and equipment operation. The role includes leading work, ensuring safety, and coordinating traffic control for work zones across district operations.

The candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, ability to train staff, and experience with CDL‑regulated equipment, as well as planning and reporting on maintenance activities.

Qualifications

• Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.
• Ability to lead, direct, oversee the work of others and train others.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and use hand and power tools.
• Basic knowledge of inventory procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Skill operating and maintaining light and medium trucks and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and perform roadway maintenance activities and supervise crew.
• Provide leadership in traffic control and device management for work zones.
• Maintain safety, training, and record-keeping; ensure compliance with OSHA/VOSH rules.
• Coordinate and schedule crew, equipment, and materials to meet maintenance goals.
• Assist with planning, budgeting, and project documentation as needed.
